Historical information about the monument: Baku Music Academy named after Uzeyir Hajibeyli, the first higher music education institution in Azerbaijan (former Azerbaijan State
Conservatory) has an interesting history and architecture. The conservatory was opened on May 25, 1920 by the decision of the Department of Education of the Council of People's Commissars of the Republic. The genius composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli, known for his deep thinking and foresight, gave a lecture at the Department of Public Education, which was in fact the program and charter of the conservatory. The charter was approved by the government on August 21, 1921 and signed by the chairman of the Council of People's Commissars Nariman Narimanov and the People's Commissar of Education Dadash Bunyadzadeh.
The conservatory included three traditional levels of music education: junior, secondary and higher music education. When drafting the charter, Uzeyir bey referred to the education system of the St. Petersburg and Moscow conservatories. In theory, he raised the problem of the relationship between Eastern and Western musical cultures, which is one of the central places in the world music science and culture of the XX and XXI centuries.
After the decision of the state in 1931 to build architecture on the basis of national traditions, special attention was paid to this issue in the buildings constructed in Baku. At that time, the influence of classical European and ancient Greek architecture was felt in the creative pursuits of talented young architects Mikayil Huseynov and Sadykh Dadashov. One of their projects is the current Nizami Cinema Center.
With this center and the buildings of the Commissariat of Food Industry (now located AZERTAJ) built symmetrically with it, the cosmopolitan moments in the works of S. Dadashov and M. Huseynov almost disappear. Because it is clear that in the construction of the building of the current Baku Music Academy (Nasimi district, Sh. Badalbeyli Street, 98), built in 1936, searches were carried out within the framework of national architecture. This is considered the first national romantic architectural project. The university has been operating in this building since 1939.
During the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), as in many educational institutions, the purpose of this building was changed to a military hospital. After the end of the war, the building continues to operate as a center of higher music education. By the order of the President, the building of the Baku Music Academy was overhauled in 2008. During the renovation, the historical and architectural style of the building was preserved.
