Historical information about the monument: The administrative building, which currently houses the Azerbaijan State University of Economics and occupies a large area on Istiglaliyyat Street, is one of the finest architectural examples of our capital.
The building was built in 1901-1904 for the Baku Realniy School on the basis of the project of civil engineer M.D. Buynov. The architect developed the initial design of the building in 1892, but it was not accepted due to a number of shortcomings in the project. The project was approved in the early 1900s after some changes by the architect. On May 14, 1901, the foundation of the monumental building of the Realniy School was laid.
"Kaspi" newspaper wrote in this regard at that time: "On May 14, at 12 o'clock in the afternoon, the foundation of a Realniy School building was laid on Nikolayevsk Street with the participation of city residents. The event was attended by the head of the province Lilev, the director of the Realniy School, Denfer, the heads of other Baku schools, teachers and patrons of the Realniy School.
The building was built at the expense of the famous Baku millionaire Musa Nagiyev. According to sources, this building is one of the 98 buildings built by M. Nagiyev in Baku. According to some sources, this proposal was made to Nagiyev by a well-known national philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev.
The Realniy School continued to operate in this building until 1920. H. Zardabi, N. Narimanov and other prominent educators taught here. After the establishment of Soviet power in Azerbaijan (1920), the Baku Education Department under the People's Commissariat of the Azerbaijan SSR was located in the building. Later, Azerbaijan State University (now Baku State University) operated here.
After the university was moved to a new address, the building was transferred to the Institute of National Economy. The institute, which became the Azerbaijan State University of Economics, still operates in the same building. The building has been repaired in recent years.
